A 12V deep cycle marine battery is what you need. Depending on the size of your jon-boat, a second battery may take up too much room plus added weight. I’ve got a small fishin boat with a trolling motor, fishfinder, navigation lights, two floating fish lights, and an aeriator that I run on one battery. Given, I don’t use them all at the same time, but the battery stays charged for the entire 8 + hours I fish. And this is at night!
Have a’ 14′ Semi-V Jon (20hp) and all I use is a’ single battery. Trolling motor is put ta’ use throughout the course of the day as well as the FF and when it comes ta’ turnin’ over/startin’ the outboard I have no problems. Two batteries would be the way ta’ go but in my case I use an Optima (Blue Top) and them “puppy-dogs” can be co$tly!! Whatever you decide on it’s best ta’ go with a’ “Deep cycle” Marine type battery (already mentioned)! Conventional types ie., auto, just will not cut it ~ trust me;)… One thing that ya’ may want, just ta’ be on the safe side is a Battery Meter (link), that way you can monitor the charge of the battery when your out in the vessel. Hope we’ve givin’ you some help and “Fish On”;)… < ' ( (( > < Note: "Deep cycle" batteries can be had at a' much better price then an Optima so check out your local automotive stores and or even "Wally World" aka echhh' Walmart for the Marine type with a' different but good brand name ... Reason for my addition is that I do not patronize WALMART!!
I would get a separate one for two reasons…
1. The motor battery will last longer giving you more time on the lake.
2. If the battery for the motor does unfortunately die, you have the fish finder battery as a backup.
Good Luck
