no, you do not need a boaters license in CA to operate your 12′ john boat with a trolling motor. the boat will need to be registered though.

if you would like to learn more about boating safety then please see the free boat us online boating safety course.

The BoatUS Foundation’s Online Course is the only free Online Boating Safety Course approved by the California Department of Boating and Waterways.

Although California has no mandatory education requirements, the Department of Boating and Waterways recommends taking a boating safety course.

  2. Not at this time but many states are adopting some sort of Boater Education and Safety class. I would recommend taking a Coast Guard Auxiliary class (Auxiliary is Volunteer group) which is very low cost (typically $40 which covers the cost of book [$35] and other materials) . Just remember, you are bound by following the rules of the road regardless if your a licensed captain or not.

  3. I live and play in the SF Bay. At this time there’s NO boat licensing requirement, but it is in the works! I’d advise you to at least get your “Boater Safety Certificate” within the next two years so you can avoid the crunch when it gets approved. Once approved, every law enforcement agency is going to be hitting up all boats on the water. Since California is the second largest boating state, it could take up to three years to catch up to the demand once it’s approved. CA just doesn’t have enough resources right now to handle that change. I know this from the inside sources with the United States Power Squadron. Also, from watching how this “Broke” state is jamming everyone up for money for the coffers.
