Do you know this short story? Searching for the author/title of a short story I read years ago?
The story is set in a sea port. The opening scene is of a boy freeing a hawk or a kestrel from being tangled in the mast/sail of a ship.
In the port, the boy meets a girl on the beach who gives him an orange.
The boy is with a group of other sailors. One is a big Russian(?) who he becomes friends with, sort of.
He is on his way to meet the girl and the Russian stops him or gets in his way or tries to smother him.
He kills the Russian with a knife.
A fugitive, he hides in to the strange town.
He escapes because the hawk people hide him as payment for freeing the hawk tangled in the first scene.
I’m not sure whether the author was American or European.
The story was set in the early twentieth century or late nineteenth century.

It is more literary than popular fiction, more G.D.Maupassant-like or Dostoievski-like rather than any more recent author. Definitely pre-1945.
Cant member the title/author?
The hero of the book kindaps the girl while she is sailing her dinghy and he takes her on his ship. I remeber that her dinghy crashes into the rocks and she is upset by it. The hero has known the girl for a while but she views him as a uncle, if I remember correctly. The book is a romance novel and thats pretty much all I can remember. Hope someone can get this.
