  2. Depends on where you want to take it, how deep the water is. I had a 10 hp on mine and when it came up on a little plane, the nose came up, the back came down, and the motor tended to hit bottom so I wound up using my trolling motor all the time. Look at the ID plate on the boat and see what the max HP the transom is rated for and get one as close to that as possible. That way you will not be underpowered.

  3. Well, I have to put my 2 cents worth in here on this one… But your question makes me want to ask “best for what”?

Best for fishing? Then I would suggest the smallest, simplest and a really quite one. 15hp would be a peach of an motor for that boat and the most economical as well. No question about it. Then again, a 20 hp would push more weight (passenger & load) a bit better. I wouldn’t go any bigger, you simply won’t need it.

please check the max hp rating on the capacity plate for your jon boat to detirmine the max hp rating for your jon boat.

there are many differences in john boats including rivited vs welded. narrow vs wide, etc.

here is a listing of different jon boats offered from lowes.

    http://www.loweboats.com/pdf/spec-sheets/anglers-and-jons.pdf

they show a max hp rating for their 14′ jon boats at either 15hp, 20hp or 25hp for their different 14′ rivited jon boats and a max hp of 40hp for their welded jon boat. you can use the above we site as a guide in choosing an outboard for your boat.

    hope this helps
